ASTM A240 is a standard specification that covers chromium and chromium-nickel stainless steel plate, sheet, and strip intended for use in pressure vessels and general applications. This specification includes popular stainless steel grades such as 304 and 316, both of which are widely used across various industries due to their excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.

Grade Selection Based on Application
The choice of stainless steel grade under ASTM A240 depends largely on the application's specific requirements—such as the chemical environment, required corrosion resistance, tensile strength, and budget constraints.
Grade 304: As the most commonly used stainless steel grade, ASTM A240 Type 304 is typically selected when cost-effectiveness is a primary consideration. It offers good tensile strength and moderate to good corrosion resistance, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
Grade 316: For more demanding environments, particularly those involving exposure to aggressive substances such as seawater, ASTM A240 Type 316 is the preferred choice. Its higher molybdenum content improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, making it ideal for marine and chemical processing applications.
Both 304 and 316 grades offer good weldability. However, the carbon content in standard grades can sometimes affect their full potential in welded structures by promoting the formation of carbide precipitates in the heat-affected zones.
Low-Carbon Variants for Enhanced Weldability
To address welding-related corrosion issues, low-carbon versions such as ASTM A240 304L and ASTM A240 316L are available:
304L Stainless Steel Plate: Similar in composition to 304, the "L" denotes a low carbon content. This reduces the risk of carbide precipitation during welding, thereby improving the alloy’s performance in welded assemblies.
316L Stainless Steel Plate: Like 304L, this grade is specifically designed to prevent the formation of grain boundary precipitates in the heat-affected zone. As a result, 316L exhibits enhanced corrosion resistance after welding, making it ideal for highly corrosive environments where weld integrity is critical.
